The Togian Islands are located in Tomini Bay off the coast of Ampana. Ampana is about a three hour drive east of Poso. There is a ferry boat to the islands from Ampana, but it keeps a pretty irregular schedule, currently twice a week. You can find other faster boats daily for hire if you ask around. It takes about three hours by small boat and five hours by ferry to reach the islands. You can catch the same ferry from Poso too. I stayed in Wakai the short time I was in Togian, and liked the people at the Togian Islands Hotel. They took me out to some smaller islands where I spent the day snorkelling. There are cottages available on some islands, and accomodations can be arranged at the hotels in Wakai. When you arrive at Wakai, you will be approached by someone from one of these places. Since there are more than one, prices are competitive (currently about $6 to $10 U.S. per night inc. meals). There's a lot to see in the Togian Islands, and since transportation services have not yet developed from the mainland, you should plan to spend about a week here anyways. Let me know how you make out, since it's been a year since I was there, and things could have changed since then. | |||
