The Pantai Timur (East Coast) refers
to the somewhat straight coastal area on the east coast of the island from Parigi north
along the trans-Sulawesi highway. I don't particularly think much of Parigi,
although other people have said good things about it. As well it is perhaps the only place
between Poso and Tinombo with decent overnight accommodation. North
and south of Parigi are a multitude of Balinese villages. Although you won't find much
Balinese culture, you can find fruit like rambutan, salak, and sometimes mangosteen. There
are a number of temples as well. The scenery is a lot more beautiful than Bali though. (A
personal opinion!) Heading north towards Manado, there are many small fishing villages
each usually located near a sandy beach. If you can hire a small prahu, you can head out
to look for reefs early in the morning while the ocean is calm. The fishing is much better
here than in Palu Bay. There are still some pretty good spots along this coast, but you
won't find any tourists. Two interesting places to stop along the way are Ampibabo and Tinombo. You will find everything
you need to survive in Tinombo, but Ampibabo lacks a homestay. Go there for the
beach...makes a nice day trip from Parigi (about 1 hour by bemo), if you can get there
before the cows. Tinombo is interesting for the tribespeople that come down from the
surrounding hills on Friday for the Saturday market. They have no other contact with
outsiders except for trade. Gorontalo -- Worth a mention here because it's usually the place people end up coming from or going to North Sulawesi. Gorontalo is a nice town, but has few things going for it. The Hotel Melati is definitely the best place to stay in town, and is run by a nice guy name Alex and his son Christian. Valuable information about getting to Manado, Luwuk, Pagimana, and the Togians can be obtained from their billboards. There are overnight buses to Palu and Manado and regular boats to the Togian Islands, Pagimana, and Luwuk. |
