Tanjung Karung

Tanjung Karang is a good place to spend a few days if you like beaches. There a lots of cottages near the beach, the sand is nice, there are few people except on Sundays, and the coral reefs are good for oggling fish. Everyone locally will try to get you to stay at the Prince John Dive Resort, but there are cheaper places further up the road. If you want to dive though, you pretty much have to stay at Prince John, unless you bring all of your own equipment. All the cottages include meals in their prices. Although Prince John is the nicest, and the closest to the best spots for snorkelling, it caters mainly to tour groups and has a snobbish attitude. A much more relaxed atmosphere and much cheaper stay can be had at Harmoni Cottages at the other end of the beach. It depends what you're looking for. The best reef for snorkelling is just past the Prince John resort, in front of the cliff. When I was there, I saw several dolphins quite close to shore. Everyone is trying their best to perserve this coral area, and local people are no longer allowed to swim when the tide is low. You are constantly reminded not to step on the coral! You can get a Kijang to Donggala from the old market (Pasar Tua) on the west side of Palu. From the market in Donggala you get a bemo to Bone Oge and get out at the junction for Tanjung Karang. From the junction it's about a 1/2 km walk. Sometimes, especially when you are paying an inflated rate, it is possible to get a bemo directly to the beach from Palu or Donggala
