Luwuk is found on the eastern side of Sulawesi, and is quite isolated from the rest of the province. The people here probably have a lot more interaction with Surabaya and Manado than Palu. The harbour here is clean and picturesque. The town is built upon the hills that surround the bay. The cleanest place in Central Sulawesi, although I haven't been everywhere yet. You can't do much here, but you can get a boat out to Banggai Islands nightly. I am told that these islands are supposed to be the best for diving in Asia. The people in Luwuk are quite gentle as well, so it's not stressful to walk around town. You can eat outside without being attacked by swarms of flies (try the Depot Hawaii). The best place to stay seems to be Hotel Safari on the opposite side of town from the Ramayana, although there seems to be other reasonably clean places opening up. "Lima Kilo" (5 kms from town) is the beach where most of the locals head on Sunday. A nicer location is about 30 kms south of town near the villages of Solan and Dimpalon. You can go by bemo and get off at km marker 29 from Luwuk. The beach here is long and mostly deserted. A good place to get away from it all. Regular Pelni boats now head from Luwuk to Gorontalo in North Sulawesi and southwards to Kendari and Bali. | |||
